HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Two-time defending champion Lamar University is out to a two-stroke lead over Louisiana-Monroe at the 40th-annual Southland Conference men's golf championship. Being contested at the Canebrake Golf Club in Hattiesburg, Miss., the Cardinals are paced by Mark Van Hoose, last year's individual medalist, with a three-under 68 at the par-71, 7,003-yard course.
Van Hoose is joined by Bryan Vahlberg (-2) of Louisiana-Monroe and Brian Grossman (-1) of Stephen F. Austin under par.
Four individuals shot even-par 71 through the first 18 holes of the 54-hole event, including Chris Stroud of Lamar, the two-time defending player of the year in the Southland and individual medalist two years ago. He was tied at 71 by Steve Luminais of Nicholls State, along with David Callaway and Beau Dark of McNeese State.
Lamar shot 286 while four others are within nine strokes of the Cardinals. ULM is second at 288 with Stephen F. Austin third at 289. McNeese State is fourth at 290 and Southwest Texas rounds out the top five at 293.
Play resumes on Tuesday with round two of the three-day event beginning at 7:30 a.m.
