NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin defensive unit made plays all over the field Monday night as they held the Lumberjack offensive unit to just over 400 yards of offense on 109 plays in a two hour scrimmage. The offense managed only 10 points on the night, the touchdown coming on a Thomas Williams 12-yard run late in the evening. Freshman kicker Stephen Coker also connected from 31-yards out for the other score of the night.
"I saw some good things and some bad things tonight. That's to be expected in a scrimmage at this stage of camp. I was glad to see the first defense show up tonight and make some plays. They gave up a couple of scores in the first scrimmage, but tonight they really got after the offense and made plays," said Lumberjack head coach Mike Santiago.
SFA ended the night with 50 rushing attempts for 130 yards and the Williams touchdown run. Almost 50 yards came in the final 10-15 plays of the scrimmage as Thomas Williams hit the defense for a couple of eight to 10 yard runs. Three quarterbacks combined to go 26-59-3 for 303 yards, with senior Matt Williford leading the way. Williford completed 13 of 23 passes for 151 yards. He also added three carries for 23 yards rushing.
Sophomore Michael Williams ended the night with 145 yards passing on a 7-14 night. He was intercepted twice, but both passes went off the hands of his intended receiver. Williams also carried the ball eight times for 11 yards. He was sacked once for a 13 yard loss.
Westlake, Louisiana freshman Zeke Dixon connected on six of 22 passes for 55 yards and one interception. He also chalked up five yards rushing on two carries.
Port Arthur freshman tailback Tony Tompkins ended the night with nine carries for eight yards, but added four receptions for 28 yards out of the backfield. Marshall junior Paul Todd led the receivers with three catches for 66 yards, including a 40-yarder.
SFA will scrimmage again Saturday night at 7:00 pm in the stadium.
"We'll work on Portland State starting with Saturday's scrimmage. We've been able to take a good look at the players we have in these two scrimmages, now we?ll begin preparations for August 31 with the last scrimmage of camp," said Santiago.
