PLANO, Texas - After leading the Lamar University Cardinals to their second-consecutive championship earlier this week, Chris Stroud has been voted the repeat selection as Southland Conference Golfer of the Year.
Stroud, a product of Port Neches, Texas, ranks third among all Southland golfers with a 73.19 average over 21 rounds this spring. The freshman of the year in the Conference last year after finishing as individual medalist at the 2001 championship, Stroud finished tied for fourth at this year's tournament with a five-over par 221. He helped Lamar to its 18th Southland championship overall, a 12-stroke win over second-place Texas-Arlington.
Joining Stroud on the first-team All-Southland Conference squad for the second consecutive season is Shad Muth of Texas-Arlington. Muth, a senior from Clear Lake, Iowa, helped the Mavs to a second-place finish at the Southland tournament. Compiling a 73.63 average over 16 rounds this spring, Muth becomes the third UTA player in school history to be named to the first team twice.
The Southland's 2002 individual medalist, Mark Van Hoose, a sophomore at Lamar, was voted first team and newcomer of the year in the Conference by the head coaches. He carded an even-par 216 at the tournament to lead the field of 50 golfers. After shooting a five-over 77 on day one, the Oklahoma City, Okla., product came back with a 70 and 69 during the final two rounds to edge Trevor Sauntry of Stephen F. Austin by one stroke.
Andy Smith, a junior at Southeastern Louisiana who was third-team All-Southland last year, landed on the first team in 2002. His 71.94 stroke average is tops in the Southland this spring.
Rounding out the first team is Gibby Martens of Texas-San Antonio. The senior from Laredo, Texas, was named to the second team each of the past two years. Martens is second in the Southland with a 72.33 scoring average over 21 rounds this spring. He shot the Southland's best three-round total of the year when he had a 203 at the Wichita State Shocker Classic.
Sauntry has been voted freshman of the year after ranking eighth in average at 73.7 over 20 rounds. The Missouri City, Texas, product shot a 70 on the final day of the Conference championship to finish one-over par. Sauntry produced the Southland's best 18-hole score of the season with a 62 at the Shocker Classic on April 9.
Lamar's Brad McMakin has been voted coach of the year by Southland coaches for a second consecutive year. He has now guided his Cardinals to two team titles in just four years at the helm.
