Stephen F. Austin athletic director Steve McCarty announced this afternoon that following a conference call involving representatives from member schools of the Southland Conference, a decision has been made to cancel all scheduled athletic competitions for the weekend.
"There have been a number of things that have gone into the decision we made this afternoon. Earlier this week, we had planned to go forward with our scheduled games, barring any unforeseen circumstances. Today, the NFL and all of the colleges and universities that play Division I-A football decided not to go forth with their scheduled games. During a conference call this afternoon with other representatives of Southland Conference schools, it was agreed that the Southland Conference would also take part in the postponement of these contests," said McCarty.
Included among the cancellations of this weekend's events are the football game with Northern Iowa, a soccer game with College of the Southwest, and the Ladyjack volleyball team was also set to travel to a tournament. All events have been cancelled.
Beginning Monday, regular schedules will resume.
SFA officials said that they will explore the possibilities of filling a late October open date to make-up for the missed football game, but given the short notice, may be faced with a difficult task in securing an eleventh game for the 2001 season.
