ST. FRANCISVILLE, La. ~ Lamar University, with freshman Chris Stroud showing the way, led from start to finish and captured the school's 17th Southland Conference men,s golf title here on Wednesday. The Cardinals made it look easy, beating the other nine Southland teams by at least 11 strokes at The Bluffs on Thompson Creek course in St. Francisville, La.
The Cardinals, who shot 290 on Monday, had an eight-stroke lead cut to five in round-two action, but pushed it back to 11 with a final-round 297. As a team, they finished 27 over par with an 891 total.

With the win, Lamar earns the Southland's automatic bid to the NCAA Golf Championship.
Stroud, a Port Neches, Texas, product, shot an opening-round 68, had a one-under par 71 in round two and slipped to a two-over 74 in round three. He was able to hang on and edge Adrien Mork of McNeese State for individual medalist honors.

As a team, Lamar, the Conference,s all-time winningest men's golf program with its 17 championship trophies, captured its first since 1987. The Cardinals were victorious in the Southland's first 10 championships (1964-73) and won six of seven from 1981 through 1987. Lamar left the Southland following the 1987 season and this year won its first title since rejoining the league in 1999.
