
SFA Golf Competes At The Southland Conference Championship

ST. FRANCISVILLE, La. ~ Lamar University shot a two-over-par 290 in opening-round action at the Southland Conference Golf Championship at The Bluffs on Thompson Creek course in St. Francisville, La., today The Cardinals have an eight-stroke lead over defending champion Southeastern Louisiana University and two others.
The University of Texas-San Antonio and McNeese State University are tied with SLU at 298, two strokes ahead of fifth-place Sam Houston State University.
Lamar is led by freshman Chris Stroud, who shot an opening-round 68 and will enter Tuesday morning's second-round action with at least a three-stroke lead over the rest of the field which totals 50 golfers. The Port Neches, Texas, product entered the tournament with the Southland's fifth-best scoring average for the spring at 73.44 strokes per 18 holes.
McNeese State's Adrien Mork is the only other golfer to finish round one under par as the freshman from Toulouse, France, carded a 71 on the par-72 course.
Seven golfers are tied at even-par 72.
As a team, Lamar, the Conference's all-time winningest men,s golf program with 12 championship trophies, is looking to capture its first since 1987. The Cardinals were victorious in the Southland,s first 10 championships (1964-73) and won six of seven from 1981 through 1987. Lamar left the Southland following the 1987 season and is looking for its first title since rejoining the league in 1999.

At stake as the 54-hole championship resumes play at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday is the Southland's automatic bid to the NCAA Golf Championship. Final-round action is scheduled for Wednesday at the 7,151-yard par 72 course located north of Baton Rouge.
