After receiving a No. 73 national ranking Thursday, Texas-San Antonio saw its five-match winning streak halted by No. 33 Arkansas in a 7-0 rout. It was UTSA's first home loss of the season.
Then at Arlington Sunday morning, the top two teams in the league faced each other with UTSA coming up short 6-1.
Texas-Arlington (9-5, 6-0), the defending Southland Conference champion, won the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and 3. The Mavericks then took singles wins at each position except No. 4 where Eva Soderkvist came back to defeat Gwen Behrendt 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Lisa Jackson, last season's player of the year and the player of the week, helped UTA maintain its perfect Conference record with wins over Southwest Texas and UTSA. Jackson did not drop a set in a 6-0, 6-1 win over SWT's Sarah Tritt and a 6-0, 6-2 victory over UTSA's Phyllis Wilunda at No. 1 singles. She and teammate Marketa Cizova were an unbeatable tandem at No. 1 doubles, going 8-2 and 8-6 against SWT and UTSA, respectively.
UTA's next challenge is a Sunday match at Louisiana-Monroe (11-8, 6-1), which is now tied for second with UTSA.
The Lady Indians picked up two Conference victories last week over Northwestern State and McNeese State. Their Saturday match at Stephen F. Austin was rescheduled for April 16 due to rain.
Anne Mette, Anna Doan and Karin Mohl, Southeastern Louisiana's top three singles players, improved to a combined 31-4 overall and 17-1 in SLC play last week. Mette and Doan have each won eight straight matches while Doan has won her last five.
SLU (8-5, 4-2) sits in fourth place followed by Northwestern State (7-9, 4-4) and McNeese State (7-7, 3-4).
Looking at the postseason picture, UTA, UTSA and ULM can clinch berths to the Southland Conference Tournament with one more win. Likewise, the next loss for SWT and Nicholls State will eliminate them from postseason play.
The top six teams advance to the tournament, which will be hosted by UTSA April 20-22.
