Rain at the end of January slowed the start of the 2001 season for a few teams, but four have gotten off to undefeated starts. Leading the pack is Lamar with a pair of road wins against Centenary, 5-2, and Louisiana Tech, 6-1. Sophomore Kasia Finkowska is 2-0 at both No. 1 singles and doubles. She hasn't dropped a set in the two matches.
Two squads are 1-0. McNeese State defeated La. Tech, 6-1. Nicholls State's victory was a 5-4 win over Mississippi University for Women. The win was the first for new Lady Colonels head coach Robby Flink. Senior Virginie Villani won at No. 2 singles in straight sets and claimed the one doubles victory, teaming with Rachel Wade to win 8-4 in a pro set.
Southeastern Louisiana has been successful in two of three outings already. After losing to UTPA, 4-3, the Lady Lions have earned wins over La. Tech and Centenary. Freshman Karin Mohl has not dropped a set in her three singles matchups and is also 3-0 in doubles.
Junior Diala Ammar has also gone undefeated at No. 4 singles for Sam Houston State, helping the Bearkats to a 1-1 start. SHSU lost to UTPA, 4-3, then defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-3. Ammar, who got the winning point in the TAMU-CC contest, has split in doubles with Ivette Andrade.
Texas-Arlington, defending Conference champion, beat Houston, 6-1, then fell to Rice, 5-2. The Mavericks had the early advantage against the Owls, winning the doubles point with victories at the one and two positions, both 8-6 decisions. Senior Lisa Jackson downed Erin Waters at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2, for the Mavs' only singles win. Jackson and Ana Lukner are 2-0 in doubles.
Texas-San Antonio was swept by Texas A&M Saturday, then bounced back to dominate Texas-Pan American yesterday for a 6-1 win. Senior Phyllis Wilunda won her No. 3 singles match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, over Julie Fife of UTPA.
Four Southland teams are searching for their first victories. Northwestern State lost to North Texas, 6-1, and Stephen F. Austin was dominated by Texas A&M, 7-0. Both Louisiana-Monroe and Southwest Texas have gotten off to slow starts with three losses each.
