CONTACT: Rob Meyers
NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf coach Bill Hill has announced he will retire as the head coach of the SFA golf team at the conclusion of the season. The last scheduled competition for the Lumberjack golf team is April 16-18, at the Southland Conference Golf Championships, at Columbia Lakes Golf Club in West Columbia.
Hill has guided the Lumberjack golf program for the past ten years, winning two Southland Conference titles during that time. Hill also guided the Lumberjacks to their only NCAA Regional appearance following the 1996 season.
SFA claimed the SLC title in 1991 and again in 1999 at Tyler's HollyTree Country Club. This fall, the Lumberjack golfers won two of the five events they entered, finishing no lower than sixth in any event. They claimed the title at the 1999 Lamar Invitational held this past fall at Columbia Lakes, the site of the 2000 SLC Championships, and also at the UT-Pan American Invitational held in Edinburg.
Hill has been named Southland Conference Coach of the Year on two occasions, following the 1991 and 1996 seasons.
"We hate to lose a quality coach and quality person like Bill Hill. Coach Hill has done a tremendous job of not only coaching golfers, but also of molding young men during his 10 years at the university. While we will begin searching immediately for someone to fill the position, I don't know if we can ever find anyone to take his place," said athletic director Steve McCarty.
