NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin athletic director Steve McCarty announced today that Mike Hopson has been named head golf coach at SFA to replace the retiring Bill Hill. Hopson has been an associate professor in SFA's College of Education since January, 1999.
"I am very pleased to add Mike to our athletic staff. His familiarity with the university and people on campus will help make the transition an easier one. I truly believe that we have found someone that can continue the excellent job that Bill Hill has done for the past ten years, said McCarty."
Hopson came to SFA after spending most of his career as a public school administrator with the Rockwall and Plano Independent School Districts. He also served as the Director of Student Activities and Golf Coach at Henderson County junior College in the mid-1970's.
The 1969 Stephen F. Austin graduate has also earned advanced degrees from UT-Tyler and the University of North Texas. Hopson received his doctorate from North Texas in 1998.
As a collegiate golfer, Hopson was a Junior College All-American in 1965 at Tyler Junior College. The following year he went on to compete for the University of Oklahoma. Hopson and his Sooner teammates earned an NCAA tournament bid in the 1966-67 season.
Hopson spent two years as a golf professional in the early 1970's before returning to teaching. He coached the Plano Senior High School golf team from 1970-72, and during the 1974-75 season, led the team to a third place finish at the State Championships. He also led Henderson County Junior College, (now Trinity Valley) to two conference titles during his four seasons as the golf coach there.
The Carthage, Texas native currently keeps an active tournament schedule where he has won four North Texas Senior PGA events.
