NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin senior Lance Dunaway has been selected to participate in the NCAA Central Regional Golf Tournament, May 18-20 at the Victoria Country Club in Victoria. Dunaway is one of six individuals from the three district Central Region to be selected to compete.
The Longview senior helped lead the Lumberjack golf team to two team titles during the 1999-2000 season, and also claimed two individual titles along the way. Dunaway won the University of Arkansas-Little Rock Intercollegiate title with scores of 75-70-71 for a 216 total. He also claimed the individual tournament title at the UT-Pan American Golf Classic in November, 1999. The Lumberjacks also claimed the team title at the event.
Dunaway recorded six top ten finishes in the 13 tournaments the Lumberjacks played in the fall and spring seasons. He played every round of every tournament for the `Jacks during his senior season. In 39 rounds Dunaway had a 73.69 stroke average, firing a low round of 68 on three separate occasions. He shot an opening round 68 in the 2000 Southland Conference Golf Championships, and shot rounds of 76 and 74 to finish in third place at the event. The Lumberjacks finished fourth, six shots behind the winners, Southeastern Louisiana.
He was also named a First Team All-Southland Conference selection this spring by a vote of conference head coaches, and was named the 2000 George Reese Golf Award winner for the second year in a row at SFA.
Twenty-seven teams from the Big Ten, the Big 12, Sun Belt, SWAC, and Southland Conference will all compete at the Central Regional in Victoria. The top teams, along with the top two individuals from non-advancing teams will qualify for the NCAA Championships to be held later this month in Alabama.
