Coach Mike Hopson and members of the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf squad are in Las Cruces, New Mexico this week to take part in the Herb Wimberley Classic hosted by New Mexico State University.
The tournament, in its 37th year of existence, is named for the former golf coach at New Mexico State. The Aggies have won their tournament a record 13 times in the past. New Mexico State is the defending champion of the tournament.
Former U.S. Open champion Hale Irwin is a former champion of the event, winning the individual title in 1967. Sports Illustrated columnist Rick Reilly also won the individual title while playing for Arizona State in 1979.
The 'Jacks will play 36-holes Friday with the final 18 hgoles taking place Saturday.
Following the trip to Las Cruces, SFA returns home to host the Crown Classic at Lufkin's Crown Colony Country Club next week.
