Golf To Host Crown Classic Monday and Tuesday

NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The field for the annual SFA Crown Colony Classic has been set and is highlighted by the return of last year's defending champion, Lamar University. The event will be held at Lufkin's Crown Colony Country Club with the 17-team field playing 36-holes Monday, October 16, and an 18-hole final round on Tuesday, October 17.
Teams from the Southland, the Big 12, the Southeastern, Western Athletic, and Big West Conferences dot the field. Baylor University, which finished three shots back of Lamar last season, will return as will teams from Rice, Arkansas-Little Rock, and Oral Roberts.
Eight teams from the Southland Conference join host Stephen F. Austin for the 54-hole event Southeastern Louisiana, the 1999 Southland Conference champions return to Crown Colony after missing last year's event. Joining SFA and SLU in the field will be teams representing Sam Houston, Southwest Texas, UT-San Antonio, UT-Arlington, McNeese State, University of Louisiana-Monroe and Lamar, the defending champions.
New Mexico State University and the University of Louisville make their first appearances at the Crown Classic as they join the field for 2000. The University of Arkansas represents the Southeastern Conference in the field this year.
In 1999, the Lumberjacks finished fourth in the two-day event, just behind Texas Tech, Baylor and Lamar. The `Jacks placed two individuals, Jason Alexander and Lance Dunaway in the top 15 of the tournament.
The teams will play a practice round Sunday, with a 36-hole day scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at approximately 7:45 a.m., Monday. The tournament concludes with 18-holes Tuesday with tee times starting at 8:00 a.m. on both the first and tenth tees.
