During his first season at SFA, his athletes set two school records in the Women's 4x100 relay and in the Men's 400m hurdles. He helped coached two NCAA Outdoor Regional Qualifiers in Jarvis Anderson and Bryce Williams. Anderson represented the Lumberjacks on the national stage at the 2025 NCAA Outdoor National Championship in June. Scales' athletes recorded six top-ten times with three conference medalists and three conference champions.
Scales comes to Nacogdoches from Davenport University and coached with there in 2023-24. Prior to Davenport, Scales spent time at Central Michigan University starting in August 2022 where he worked with the sprinters, hurdlers, and horizontal jumpers during his time at CMU.
Scales served as an assistant at Columbia University in 2020-21 and before that was an assistant at Texas Lutheran, Colgate, and Heidelberg.
At his previous institutions, Scales has coached two NCAA East Regional Qualifier Womens Triple Jump (Columbia) Womens Long Jump (Central Michigan). He also has coached athletes that have set eight school records in the Men's 60H, Indoor and Outdoor women's pole vault, Men's 500m dash (Colgate.) women's 4x1 (Heidelberg) Men's High Jump (Texas Lutheran) Mens Triple Jump & 100m Dash (Davenport). He has also helped coach four Conference Champions Men's 110H Men's High Jump Men's 4x1 (Texas Lutheran) Mens 100m Dash (Davenport) and has also helped athletes set three school records (mens Triple Jump mens 100m dash Mens HJ)
As a student-athlete, Scales competed for Kent State University, where he graduated with a degree in Communication in 2014, and earned his Master’s Degree in Education in 2017 from Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio. He is a Native of Columbus, Ohio.
