HORSESHOE BAY, Texas – It's official. The Stephen F. Austin Athletics Department is the Southland Conference's best following the conclusion of the 2025-26 athletic year. The league awarded the Lumberjacks the Commissioner's Cup on Wednesday evening at the conclusion of the annual SLC summer meetings. The Jacks earned the SLC Women's All-Sports Trophy and finished as runner-up for the Men's All-Sports Trophy. Additionally, the department was recognized as having the league's most improved Academic Progress Rate, an NCAA metric used to track academic success, eligibility and student-athlete retention.
The Commissioner's Cup is the first for the Lumberjacks since the 2020-21 athletic season and is the department's seventh as a league member dating back to the first year of the competition in the 2002-03 season.
Overall, the Jacks totaled 154.0 points beating second-place UTRGV by 8.5 points and finishing 30 points up on third-place Lamar. Among the department's 16 sports that counted toward the standings, SFA earned double-digit point totals for a dozen of them with eight program's capturing a dozen or more points.
The SFA women totaled 88.0 points with seven of ten programs finishing with ten or more points. SFA placed 14 points higher than second-place UTRGV and 16.5 points up on third-place Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Ladyjack volleyball, SLC regular season and tournament champions, led the SFA women with 13.5 points, while women's soccer, SLC regular season and tournament runner-up, and women's cross country, SLC champions, each added a dozen. SFA's women's indoor and outdoor track and field squads combined to produce 21.0 points after earning top three placements, with SLC tournament champions Ladyjack basketball and Ladyjack tennis earning 11.5 and 10.5 points, respectively.
The Lumberjack men were outpaced by only 5.5 points, with two fewer sports, as UTRGV won with 71.5 points. The Lumberjacks received a dozen points from five of six programs led by Lumberjack basketball's regular season championship, Lumberjack cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field's triple crown and department team of the year Lumberjack football claiming the outright SLC regular season title.
The Southland Conference Commissioner's Cup is awarded annually to the institution compiling the highest combined all-sports point total, calculated from each institution's top fourteen (14) scoring sports regardless of gender.
The Lumberjacks return to action in August as women's soccer preps for year two under head coach Ashley Whittemore with a purple-white scrimmage (8/1) and an exhibition with longtime bitter rival Sam Houston State (8/8) before opening the regular season against Sul Ross State (8/13) at the Chopping Block.
