Sophomore guard triggers in eight three pointers at 80% rate; most makes from beyond-the-arc since 2017
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – A physical contest blanketed Friday night action inside William R. Johnson Coliseum as Stephen F. Austin used a hot night shooting from sophomore Narit Chotikavanic to grind through Abilene Christian for a 76-66 result and a fourth-straight win.
Leading by five at 69-64 with 1:49 to play, the 'Jacks engineered a stop out of a timeout and on the other end of the floor, Chotikavanic delivered the dagger as Keon Thompson found the former at the right elbow and a quick trigger tickled twine as the SFA lead grew to eight with 65 seconds to play. The moment served as the climatic end to a contest that featured nine lead changes and eight tied scores.
The 'Jacks struggled from the floor in the early going as ACU jumped out to an 8-2 lead five and half minutes in. Gediminis Alisas scored on a jumper and Chotikavanic hit a trifecta on an assist from Thompson to pull the 'Jacks within a bucket at 10-8 with 13:05 remaining in the first half. Moments later, Thompson completed a drive to the bucket to knot the contest at 12 just prior to a late arriving under-12 media.
Lateef Patrick Jr. gave SFA the lead at the 9:36 mark as Thompson assisted on the second-chance bucket for a 16-14 SFA lead. With the first half clock below the three-minute mark, Eltramon Smith Jr. and Chotikavanic both nailed triple tries as the SFA advantage moved to 32-28, before the latter hit another one in the final 50 seconds as the 'Jacks carried a 35-33 lead into the break.
