
Ladyjacks Lose Heartbreaker in Beaumont

BEAUMONT, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin women's basketball team (13-4, 3-3 SLC) made a quick trip down to Beaumont to matchup with the preseason favorite Lamar Cardinals (10-4, 5-0 SLC).
SFA started out hot with an 11-5 run that included three-pointers from Trinity Moore, Harmanie Dominguez, and Faith Blackstone. The Ladyjacks were able to hold onto to a six-point lead until Lamar went on a 5-0 run to cut the lead down to one, 13-12, with 3:10 left in the first quarter. Thirty seconds later, the Cardinals would tie the game off a three-pointer and then take the lead with a layup on their next possession, 17-15. SFA went on a 7-0 run to finish out the first quarter with a 22-17 lead.
Both offenses struggled at the beginning of the second quarter as neither team made a basket from the field until the Cardinals did with 7:19 left in the first half, 24-19. SFA was able to continue to hold their lead due to magificant free throw shooting from Cha Gardner and Faith Blackstone, 26-19. Lamar went on a six-point spurt to cut the deficit to one, 26-25, with 4:30 left in the second quarter. VanSickle quickly stopped that run with a three-pointer to give the 'Jacks a four-point lead. The Cardinals went on a mini four-point run to tie the game up at 29. Both teams traded baskets for the last couple of minutes of the first half, but Lamar went into the locker room with a slim 34-32 lead after a made three-pointer to end the first half.
Each team came out of the locker room with a renewed fire as they exchanged baskets for the first four minutes. Four straight points from Ashlyn Traylor-Walker gave SFA a 43-41 lead with 5:04 left in the third. Lamar went on a 5-0 run with 2:44 left to take a 48-45 lead. SFA responded with a layup from Gardner and two made free throws from VanSickle, 49-48. Blackstone finished off the third quarter with a layup that send the 'Jacks to the fourth quarter with a 51-50 lead.
Gardner started the final ten minutes off with a bang as she drained a three to extend the SFA lead to four, 54-50. Lamar tied the game up at 54 before both teams exchanged baskets for the next several minutes. The Cardinals turned the tables on the 'Jacks as they made back-to-back jumpers to take a four-point lead, 64-60, with 3:29 left in the game. VanSickle cut the lead down to one with a three-pointer, 64-63. However, Lamar responded with a layup and a three to take a six-point lead with 2:12 left. The Ladyjacks were not done yet as Key Roseby and Dominguez hit back-to-back three-pointers to tie the game up at 69 with 1:20 left. Lamar hit a layup with 43 seconds left to retake the lead, 71-69. The Cardinals then hit three free throws to make it a 74-69 game with 22 seconds left. Traylor-Walker hit a jumper to make it a one possession game, 74-71. Lamar made one free throw before Dominguez hit another three with ten seconds left to bring it back to a one-point game with ten seconds left. The Cardinals were able to make two free throws which meant SFA had to make a three to tie and send the game to overtime. With six seconds left, Traylor-Walker got the ball to the front court and passed it to Blackstone for a three that hit the front of the rim as time expired. Lamar won the game by a score of 77-74.
