
Lumberjacks Split Regular Season Series With Mavericks after 71-63 Loss

ARLINGTON, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks traveled to College Park Center to face off against the UT Arlington Mavericks. SFA was unable to complete the regular season sweep with a 71-63 loss to UTA. The 'Jacks fell to 14-10 overall and 7-6 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Mavericks improved to 12-12 overall and 7-7 in WAC play.
After just three minutes into the game SFA fell into an early 10-2 deficit. The 'Jacks started the game 1-for-6 (16.7%) from the field. SFA's only offensive success came from the free throw line as they were 2-for-15 with ten minutes to play in the first half.
Kimahri Wilson capped off a Lumberjack 20-10 run going into halftime. SFA trailed by two after the first half as the Mavericks led 29-27. Stephen F. Austin's defense prevented UT Arlington from taking a bigger lead. The 'Jacks forced 13 turnovers and had seven steals in the first half.
Jalil Beaubrun led all Lumberjack scorers with eight points. Beaubrun shot 3-for-4 from the field and added a block to his first half performance. Kimahri Wilson led both teams with three steals entering halftime.
SFA started the second half with two made field goals through the first five minutes of the second half. Through the entirety of the second half both teams struggled offensively. The Lumberjacks and Mavericks both shot under 30% from the field with 8:45 left in the second half.
With :19.5 left in the game, Matt Hayman drove to the bucket and tied the game at 61-61. It was the first time the 'Jacks were tied since both teams were interlocked at 2-2. SFA held off the Mavericks last second attempt and entered overtime tied 61-61. The Lumberjacks scored one field goal in overtime and fell 71-63
SFA shot 21-for-55 (38.2%) from the field and 1-for-15 (6.7%) from three-point range.
Matt Hayman was the Lumberjack's leading scorer with 18 points on 7-for-17 shooting from the field. Latrell Jossell (14) and Jalil Beaubrun (11) were the other scorers in double digits for SFA.
Latrell Jossell and Kimahri Wilson both had three steals for the 'Jacks. Jossell now has at least three steals in four straight games. Jalil Beaubrun added a game high three blocks. SFA's defense also posted 22 turnovers and five total blocks.
SFA will return to William R. Johnson Coliseum to face Abilene Christian University. Tip-off is set for Saturday, February 17th at 2:00 p.m. CT. It will be the last home game for SFA before they hit the road for a four-game road trip. SFA will face Seattle U, Utah Valley, California Baptist, and then round out the trip with a showdown against the WAC leading Grand Canyon Lopes.
