EDINBURG, Texas. The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (5-4, 0-1) fell 68-65 on the road to the UTRGV Vaqueros (5-3, 1-0).
The Lumberjacks jumped out to an early 4-0 lead thanks to baskets from Myles Jenkins and Juhlawnei Stone. The first five minutes remained a defensive battle as SFA held a 6-2 lead at the 15-minute mark of the first half. At the halfway point of the first half, both defenses continued to make points hard to come by as SFA held a slim 10-9 lead.
At the halfway point of the first, Keon Thompson started to find his groove offensively as he would rattle off eight of the next 10 Lumberjack points, however, both teams remained deadlocked at 20 points apiece with three minutes remaining in the first. UTRGV would close out scoring for the first half with a pair of free-throws and held a 24-22 halftime lead.
The Lumberjacks came out of halftime firing on all cylinders as they put together a 6-0 scoring run to go ahead 28-24 early in the second half. Following a pair of three-pointers from the Vaqueros, Keon Thompson would continue to rack up the points as he would rattle off another eight points for SFA to give SFA a 38-30 lead with five minutes gone in the second half.
Matt Hayman would rattle off four straight points of his own at the halfway point of the second half to put SFA back in the lead 46-45 with 10 minutes remaining in the contest. The next five minutes remained a back-and-forth affair with neither team holding more than a five-point advantage, however, UTRGV held a 57-53 lead with five minutes remaining.
The final five minutes would see the Lumberjacks close the Vaqueros lead down to one or two points multiple times, but the Vaqueros were able to sink free-throws to offset the SFA points and were able to hang on for a nail-biting 68-65 win over SFA.
