NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin defeated California Baptist 80-58 in a strong offensive performance for the 'Jacks. SFA improves to 19-10 (WAC 11-5) while CBU falls to 15-14 (WAC 7-9).
Nigel Hawkins provided most of the early offense for the Lumberjacks as he scored eight of the team's ten points in the opening six minutes. The 'Jacks were able to maintain the lead for majority of the first half but the Lancers kept them in reach and never let the 'Jacks get more than a five-point lead. That was until AJ Cajuste picked up from last week and gave SFA six more points in the final two and a half minutes, giving the Lumberjacks a 32-24 lead going into half. Defense played a big role in the first half, holding the Lancers to just eight buckets on 23 attempts and forcing 12 turnovers.
Hawkins reciprocated the first half and once again put up eight of the team's first ten points in the beginning of the second half. It was then Sadaidriene Hall's turn to take over the scoring as Hall put up ten of the team's next 12 points. Both Hawkins and Hall helped SFA go on a monster 22-6 run and assisted in making 13 of the team's first 15 shots of the second half. The Lumberjack's electric offense pushed the 'Jacks to a 30-point lead at 68-38 with nine and a half minutes remaining. The Lancers were able to make some late buckets, but it just wasn't enough to close the huge gap the Lumberjacks put on them.
Hawkins had one of his best performance's of the year scoring 21 total points along with three rebounds and five assists. Hall put up his third consecutive double-figure game, this time coming with 15 points. Cajuste had another solid night, putting up 12 points, three rebounds, and two assists.
In a night dominated by the Lumberjacks, SFA led in: field goal percentage (53.4-34.5), three-point percentage (46.7-29.2), free-throw percentage (78.6-68.4), turnovers forced (15-8), steals (7-3), points off turnovers (23-8), and points in the paint (36-20).
The 'Jacks now look towards their big home finale against rival Sam Houston on Wednesday, March 1st with tipoff at 6:30 p.m.
