NACOGDOCHES, Texas - When it comes to making an impact in someone's life, it can be a momentary decision that can change the course of yourself and other lives. Sophomore Ladyjack Bowler Kara Kay has taken a whole new meaning to that, taking leadership characteristics and helping make lives better in partner with Be The Match.
"For patients with blood cancers like leukemia, lymphoma and other life-threatening diseases, a cure exists. Be The Match® is a community of donors, volunteers, health care professionals and researchers who deliver cures by helping patients get the life-saving marrow transplant they need."
Kara has always wanted to help people out, her life showed her a specific way that she could do that.
"I've always wanted to help people in any way possible," she continued. "I met people from Be The Match in Fall 22 on the SFA campus and after hearing them tell me I could save a life I immediately signed up. After losing my mom to cancer in 2019, there was no doubt in my mind that I would donate in order to save another family from the pain my family had to go through."
Being able to give has bean amazing for Kara not only for herself, but also for representing SFA Bowling and Athletics in a positive way. "If I could donate again I would do it in a heartbeat" Kara states.
She wants to remind everyone that even though she is a young adult, that shouldn't stop others from wanting to make a change.
"Do not let the fear of one thing prohibit you from fulfilling another," Kara states. "After talking to many people about donating, the most common fear is needles. After going through the process I can guarantee you it is completely worth the little pain you feels. I justified the pain this way, the little pain I feel now is no where near as bad as the pain the patients feel after months to years of chemo. If you are in good health and can donate, please do it. You have the ability to save these patients and their family's lives."
You too can make an impact at SFA and the Nacogdoches community. Be The Match will be on SFA's campus located at Surfin' Steve Monday the 23rd through Thursday the 26th from 9:00 AM-3:00 PM. Yo0u can find out more details on Be The Match here.
