RIVERSIDE, California --
The Lumberjacks (13-8, 5-4 WAC) clawed back in a gritty Western Athletic Conference road contest after trailing by as many at 10 midway through the first half, able to grab the 81-77 triumph in Riverside over California Baptist. Gavin Kensmil poured in a career-high 37 points (14-19 FG, 9-9 FT) including career-point No. 1,000 to lead the charge for SFA. Twenty-eight of Kensmil's 37 points came in the second half.
To complement Kensmil's outstanding night, Calvin Solomon chipped in 12 critical points with four assists, in addition to David Kachelries with 10. Sadaidriene Hall registered eight points and 12 rebounds for another meaningful performance in tonight's win.
The 'Jacks were knotted up with the Lancers (35-35) after the first 20 minutes of play, as the contest was bound to come down to the wire based on both teams trading baskets early on in the second half. The win column was in contention for both squads until the final seconds of the game, but the 'Jacks strung together a few pivotal mini-runs to remain in the driver's seat.
SFA capitalized off of two CBU turnovers to gain a six-point lead with just under eight minutes to play generated by an alleyoop dunk from Solomon and layup from Kachelries to notch a 63-57 lead. The combination of two CBU technical free throw makes from Kensmil along with the second-chance dunk of Solomon's shortly after sealed the deal for SFA with 1:06 on the clock.
The Lumberjacks dominated in paint points (56-22), shot 49 percent from the field and out rebounded the Lancers 35-29. The 'Jacks snagged 12 steals and dished out 18 assists on 30 made baskets.
SFA will be back in action on Thursday, February 3rd against Utah Valley in the William R. Johnson Coliusem. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
