NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Battle of the Piney Woods 2021 has arrived to East Texas. With Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston football set to meet for the 95th iteration in the lone star state rivalry, excitement is high and a buzz has gripped the local area.
After opening WAC play this past week, both SFA Soccer and SFA Volleyball continue their conference slate this week. Soccer hits the road for matchups at Lamar and UTRGV, while volleyball hosts Abilene Christian and Tarleton State at home in a pair of all-purple showdowns.
SFA Cross Country is back in action after a two-week hiatus, while SFA Tennis continues its fall schedule with some road matches in San Marcos.
SFA Football | 95th Battle of the Piney Woods vs. Sam Houston
NRG Stadium | Houston, Texas | Saturday, October 2
The Lumberjack football program is playing good football and off to a 3-1 start in the 2021 campaign, but faces its toughest task of all in the form of top-ranked Sam Houston, whom it will meet in the BOTPW on Saturday. The game will be played inside NRG Stadium for the 11th time in the all-time series, and SFA will be looking to snap an SHSU winning streak in the series.

SFA Volleyball | Home vs. Abilene Christian – 9/30, Tarleton State – 10/2
The Ladyjack volleyball team opened its WAC schedule with. 3-1 victory over a pesky UTRGV squad on Saturday, and will look to keep hot in league play when it hosts Abilene Christian and Tarleton State in a pair of purple on purple matchups this week inside Shelton Gymnasium. Reigning WAC Defensive Player of the Week Taya Mitchell and Freshman of the Week Valeria Rosado will look to help SFA continue its current five-match winning streak.

The Lumberjack soccer program opened WAC play on Friday with a solid 2-0 victory over rival Sam Houston at home, and will look to parlay that momentum into positive results on the road at Lamar on Thursday and UTRGV on Sunday.

The SFA Cross Country program gets back into action after a nearly three week hiatus, competing in the massive Chili Pepper race in Fayetteville.
