LAS CRUCES, New Mexico --
The No. 6 seed Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks won its first Western Athletic Conference postseason match in a five-set triumph (25-17, 23-25, 25-19, 18-25, 16-14) over No. 3 Chicago State in the Pan American Center on Thursday night. The 'Jacks move to 18-8 this season, set to face No. 7 Utah Valley tonight at 8:00 p.m. on ESPN+ for a chance to play in the championship game.
Valeria Rosado led the way with 18 kills followed by 10 from Leah Powell, in addition to a balanced performance from Taya Mitchell (7 kills and 7 blocks). Ariana Pagan contributed eight service aces with three from Alyssa Ortega.
Set 1 belonged to the Ladyjacks in a convincing fashion, where they squared away a 5-1 run to go ahead 13-7 at the critical mid-set mark, consisting of points from two service aces (Maddy Bourque and Alyssa Ortega), two kills (Ielan Bradley and Leah Powell), along with a CSU attack error to boost momentum in SFA's favor. The 'Jacks were the first team to 20 thanks to Mitchell and Ielan Bradley finding the gaps to get there, but CSU capitalized on four straight points to make a final run in the opening stanza. Two Rosado kills plus one from Harrington sealed the deal for the 25-17 victory on a .455 hitting percentage.
Both teams traded points as the Cougars took Set 2, all tied up at 19-19 in a competitive bout. The Cougars were the first team to 20 this time around, but they were able to score five of the next eight points to become victorious and knot the match up at 1-1. The Ladyjacks came out striking in Set 3 though, opening the frame to take a 6-2 advantage teed up by three straight Ariana Pagan service aces, where the next pivotal Ladyjack run took place from two more aces from Pagan, soon to be complemented from Mitchell's kill to generate the tally to 16-12, SFA. Due to the Cougars capitalizing in Set 4, the match was bound to go to five.
The Ladyjacks opened up the game-winning set 4-0 to set the tone early, followed by three CSU attack errors to extend the lead to 7-1. The Cougars climbed back to bring the set within one, only for Harrington to slam home a kill to put the 'Jacks up by two, 13-11. But the set wasn't over as both teams fought at 14-14, tabbed by an ace from Rosado to take the match.
