NACOGDOCHES, Texas – With the 2019 track and field season in the books, SFA Track and Field head coach Phil Olson has selected the recipients of the 2019 Joe Richardson and Carolyn Barnett awards, recognizing the top performer for both the men's and women's teams during the 2019 Indoor/Outdoor season. Junior Imani Nave and senior Drake Murphy were selected to receive the Barnett and Richardson award, respectively. Nave is a repeat honoree, having earned the team MVP award last season as well.
"Drake Murphy and Imani Nave are outstanding Track and Field MVP selections for the 2019 season", said SFA head coach Phil Olson. "Our coaching staff felt that the two excelled at the highest levels at the conference meet and nationally. They did a wonderful job of leading our team through their work ethic, their positive attitude, and having a championship mentality throughout the season, even when things got difficult. Through it all they persevered and did whatever we asked of them. I know that Ms. Barnett and the late Coach Joe would be very proud of these selections."
During the 2019 season, the 'Jacks captured a pair of Southland Conference titles, with the Ladyjacks sweeping both the indoor and outdoor titles. SFA also qualified a program-record seven athletes for the NCAA Division I championship meet, all of whom earned All-American honors to wrap up the season.
Imani Nave's junior season in a Ladyjack uniform was one for the books, as the Tomball native scored 22 points for SFA in guiding them to a dominant win at the indoor conference meet. Nave followed that effort up with 21 points in the outdoor championship, as the SFA women came within six points of setting a Southland Conference record for team points scored at the outdoor championship. Qualifying for the NCAA West Preliminary meet in both the 400m and the 4x400m relay, Nave helped guide her mile relay team on to the NCAA Division I meet, where they captured Second Team All-American honors. Nave ended the season as a five-time All-Conference selection and conference champion in two events.
Murphy filled out his 2019 campaign as one of the strongest performers on the Lumberjacks unit, tallying 16 points in the indoor conference meet and 18 in the outdoor meet. Murphy was the conference champion in the 800m run in both meets, and qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary Round meet in both the 800 as well as with the Lumberjacks 4x400 relay team. Murphy was a three-time All-Conference selection, set both the indoor and outdoor school record in the 800m, and was a three-time Southland Conference Athlete of the Week selection.
