NACOGDOCHES, Texas - In yet another trendsetting announcement aimed at activating new fans in SFA's athletic venues, the SFA department of athletics has announced it will create, and manage, a new eSports league beginning in the fall of 2019 and ending in May of 2020. The new league will utilize the SFA Athletic Tokens to enter the events and to randomly select participants to compete on eight play dates throughout the academic year prior to selected home games. With prizes for the winners of each play date, winners will also be invited back to compete in a final Tournament of Champions to announce the inaugural SFA eSports League Champion.
"We are excited to announce this opportunity and to be able to create an experience that will capture new fans," commented SFA director of athletics Ryan Ivey. "One of our main goals is to increase the awareness and exposure of our SFA Athletics brand across new mediums. As one of the fastest growing entertainment sectors in the world, eSports provides us a chance to leverage our department assets, including being able to utilize William R. Johnson Coliseum during a traditional quiet period, for a really unique tailgate experience."
The site of the gaming competitions will be within the newly renovated William R. Johnson Coliseum that currently hosts both the Lumberjack and Ladyjack basketball teams. All match days and tailgate activities will be indoors and for free for anyone that would like to relax in the climate-controlled environment before games. To add to the experience, the video game competitions will be displayed on the new big screen over center court and on all monitors around the arena.
While it is free to attend the tailgate, in order to be eligible for the drawing to compete, participants must create a free SFA Athletics Token Club wallet and submit the required tokenized entrance fee upon arriving to the event. Fans may do this by visiting www.sfasportscience.com and navigating to the SFA Athletics Token page. As a reminder, SFA Athletics Token rewards are distributed at SFA competitions as way to incentivize attendance with redeemable benefits that attract fans of all ages. More logistical details and the pool of games one might be selected to play will be released in the coming months.
"The ability to integrate a Token Rewards program built on blockchain technology within our eSports league is critical to incentivize participation and attendance at all of our department-wide competitions," Ivey continued. "Being innovative is something that we have a renewed focus on and this eSports league provides us the opportunity to differentiate ourselves in a very unique way."
The distribution of the SFA Athletic token will be managed in department by LSI Director - Wally Crittenden and within a custom app developed by Houston-based company, Modern Sports Group. Those interested in learning more may visit the Lumberjack Sports Institute website at www.sfasportscience.com and navigate to the SFA Athletics Token page. Questions may be addressed on the SFA Athletics Telegram group.
