CLEVELAND - In an announcement made Monday morning by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), former Stephen F. Austin director of athletics Steve McCarty has been been chosen along with seven other individuals to make up NACDA's 2018 Hall of Fame class.
McCarty joins Warner Alford (University of Mississippi), Ron Case (Rowan College at Gloucester County), Deborah Chin (University of New Haven), Ed Farrington (Western Connecticut State University), Mike Jacobsen (Utah Valley University), Ed Matejkovic (West Chester University) and Brian Quinn (Cal State Fullerton) in the eight-person 2018 induction class.
The eight honorees will receive their awards on Saturday, June 30 at NACDA's 53rd Annual Convention at the Learfield Directors' Cup Luncheon, located at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in Washington, D.C.
"Receiving this most prestigious honor from NACDA brings my journey in athletics to a complete and fulfilling finish," remarked McCarty. "From a seventh-grade coach in Longview, Texas, in 1965 to becoming the director of athletics at SFA, my career can only be filled with memories I will cherish forever."
Said Robert Hill, who succeeded McCarty as SFA's director of athletics and retired on May 31, 2018, "I am so happy and proud for Steve. He has been a mentor to me and a tremendous ambassador for SFA. This honor is well earned."
McCarty worked in the athletics department at SFA for 21 years, including the final 15 as athletics director. He retired from the top spot on August 31, 2005.
During his time in Nacogdoches, Lumberjack and Ladyjack athletics experienced success across the board. The football team earned two NCAA playoff berths, three NCAA Volleyball Championship appearances and two NIVC appearances, 14 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship appearances, an appearance in the NCAA Men's Golf Regional, three Southland Conference soccer titles, an NCAA Soccer Championship appearance and six SLC cross country titles, including the past four men's championships, two women's track and field titles and one men's track and field title.
McCarty served as President of FCS ADA in 1999-00 and was a member of the NACDA Executive Committee from 2001 until his retirement in 2005. He also spent time serving on numerous committees for the Southland Conference, including finance, compliance, basketball tournament, marketing and television and officiating.
SFA athletics saw an overall upgrade in its facilities during McCarty's last decade. It was during that that time that SFA built the Jimmy W. Murphy Wellness Center and the new athletic training and academic center. He was recognized nationally for accomplishments at SFA when he received the Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award from the All-American Football Foundation.
McCarty is a two-time graduate of the university and is also a member of the SFA Alumni Association's "Football Coaches Hall of Honor." He originally entered college athletics administration following a successful high school football coaching career.
"The friends I have made through this journey have and will last a lifetime," finished McCarty. "Thanks to all who made this honor possible - especially my SFA president Dr. Baker Pattillo."
