Second-year SFA assistant coach is one of 14 NCAA DI assistant coaches on exclusive list
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Stephen F. Austin men's basketball assistant coach Desmond Haymon was recognized as one of a select group of up-and-coming assistant coaches across all of men's college basketball Wednesday morning when he was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Under Armour 30-Under-30.
Recognizing the exemplary efforts of young men's basketball coaches across all divisions of college basketball, the NABC's 2018 30-Under-30 list features 15 NCAA Division I assistant coaches including Haymon. He is one of three NCAA Division I assistants from institutions in the state of Texas on the list, too.
The 2017-18 season marked Haymon's second year as an assistant coach on head coach Kyle Keller's staff and the former SFA star helped orchestrate NCAA Division I basketball's 12th-biggest turnaround from the previous year. Earning a third-place finish in the Southland Conference regular season standings, the 'Jacks won three games in the Southland Conference Tournament to earn the program's fifth NCAA Tournament appearance.
In the 2018 NCAA Tournament, the 'Jacks earned a 14-seed in the east region and faced off against third-seeded and 14th-ranked Texas Tech in Dallas during the tournament's opening round.
All told, the 'Jacks posted a record of 28-7 which included a program-best 16 home triumphs which helped maintain the nation's best home court winning percentage over the last six seasons. During that span, SFA has gone 87-4 inside William R. Johnson Coliseum for a winning percentage of .956.
A four-year letterwinner for the 'Jacks from 2010-14, Haymon helped SFA advance to the program's second NCAA Tournament in the 2014 season. It was his game-tying four-point play in the waning seconds of regulation that helped the 12th-seeded 'Jacks defeat fifth-seeded VCU 77-75 in overtime on March 21, 2014, cementing SFA's reputation as a mid-major power.
