NACOGDOCHES, Texas – There's no place like home for the holidays, and the SFA women's basketball team will put the old adage to the test on Saturday in the final game of the 2018 calendar year, a midday matchup with Cameron University. The Ladyjacks (8-3) will be playing their first home contest since December 15 when they take on the Aggies, who are 3-7 on the season and 1-4 in their last five games.
The matchup will be shown on ESPN3, with a live call of the game's action provided by Bobby Mauro. Mauro's call will also be simulcast onto the airwaves via FM Q107.7 locally and nationwide via the TuneIn app. Live stats for the contest are available via the link above.
Defending its home court has been par to the course for SFA this year, as the 'Jacks own a stellar seven-game winning streak there and have dominated their opponents on the defensive end. Six of their seven opponents have failed to reach 60 points inside William R. Johnson Coliseum, with standout defensive efforts coming against Tulsa and Wiley in back-to-back contests earlier this month.
Entering the matchup as the Southland Conference leaders with eight wins on the season, SFA is looking for a bounce back game after a loss in the Lobo Invitational before the holiday. SFA went 1-1 in the four-team tournament, earning a win over Hampton in the opener to improve to 4-0 this season against opponents never faced by SFA prior to this season. Having no previous matchups with Lawton, Oklahoma based Cameron University, SFA will have a chance to improve to 5-0 in such games this season in Saturday's contest. SFA is also receiving votes in the Mid-Major Top 25 poll for the second time this season, having also earned a mention in the preseason edition of that same poll.
The Aggies are in the midst of their third season under the guidance of head coach Emma Andrews, who is 27-39 in three seasons at the helm of Cameron. The Aggies sit in 10thplace in Division II's Lone Star Conference, and look to hurt opponents with three-point shooting. Cameron shoots and average of 29.7 threes per game, connecting on 10.4 per game at a 35 percent clip. A trio of shooters have each knocked down 24 or more treys this season, including the team's top two scorers in Maighan Hedge (14.8 ppg) and Natalie Hablieb (14.4 ppg).
TIP-OFF TIDBITS
• Cameron is a program with multiple connections to SFA's current staff. Head coach Mark Kellogg is familiar with the Aggies due to his prior seasons coaching at West Texas A&M, while Director of Basketball Operations Kayla Scott spent two seasons coaching for the Aggies before arriving at SFA.
• SFA is 3-0 against Division II opponents during the Mark Kellogg era.
• In the past five seasons, SFA is 72-11 inside William R. Johnson Coliseum.
• Stephanie Visscher was a Ladyjack of all trades in the win over Hampton, notching seven points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals.
• Despite going 1-1 at the Lobo Invitational, SFA is receiving votes in the Top 25 Mid-Major Poll for the second time this season, having last seen a vote in the preseason release of the poll as well.
