NACOGDOCHES, Texas - In anticipation of the 2018-19 Stephen F. Austin men's and women's basketball seasons - which will begin in a little less than two weeks - the Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks, will congregate at First United Methodist Church at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 30, for the 2018 Jack McCullough Meet the `Jacks event hosted by the Nacogdoches Rotary Club.
Tickets for the event are $15 and can be purchased at the door on the day of the event. All those in attendance will be treated to a dinner of fried fish and will get the opportunity to mix and mingle with the players and coaches of the Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks.
Under the direction of third-year head coach Kyle Keller, the 2018-19 Lumberjacks return three of their five starters and a total of nine letterwinners from a 2017-18 campaign that saw the team make its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last five seasons. Following a third-place finish in the Southland Conference, SFA won a trio of games in the Southland Conference Tournament led by eventual Tournament MVP TJ Holyfield to punch its ticket to the big dance for the first time since 2015-16. SFA finished the year with a 28-7 mark.
Holyfield, fellow senior Shannon Bogues and junior Kevon Harris each earned Preseason All-Southland Conference First Team accolades earlier in the month and the 'Jacks were tabbed to win the league when the 2018-19 Southland Conference Preseason Poll was unveiled on Wednesday, Oct. 10. Over the last decade, SFA has established itself as one of the nation's finest college basketball programs by having the nation's eighth-highest winning percentage in that span.
With head coach Mark Kellogg leading the way, the Ladyjacks made it consecutive seasons with 25 or more wins by rolling to a 25-7 mark in 2017-18. That helped SFA post a runner-up finish in the Southland Conference and led by the likes of All-Southland Conference First Team pick Stevi Parker and Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year Imani Johnson the Ladyjacks advanced to the Southland Conference Tournament title game for the second-straight season. SFAs' 2017-18 season culminated with a first-round setback to George Mason in the WNIT.
In search of the program's 18th Southland Conference regular season title, SFA returns nine letterwinners from last season's squad including Preseason All-Southland Conference Second Team choice Chanell Hayes.
The Lumberjacks' season will begin inside William R. Johnson Coliseum on Tuesday, Nov. 6 when SFA tangles with in-state foe Texas Wesleyan at 6:30 p.m. A road trip to Coral Gables, Fla., will signal the start of the Ladyjacks' campaign as SFA battles Miami at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 9.
