HOUSTON, Texas – Stephen F. Austin’s Track Multi-Event student-athletes began their 2017 season with the Shirley Crowe Multi-Event hosted by Rice University. SFA sent nine athletes to Houston, including the SLC Indoor second and third place finishers junior Hunter Key and sophomore Conner Wilbur. After the two days of competition, Wilbur claimed third in the decathlon with 6267, followed by Bradley Beaty in fourth, and Tanner Parks in sixth. For the women in the heptathlon, freshman Caitlin Lennon led the Lumberjacks with a third place finish of 4504 points. Freshman Sammi Jo Brashears finished fourth, sophomore Jillian Turner finished seventh, and sophomore Kori Westmoreland was ninth.
Wilbur started the first day posting a new personal record in the 100 meter sprint of 11.46 seconds. He fought the wind through a good long jump mark, and then went on to finish day one in fourth behind Key. It would take a new PR discus throw of 33.78 meters (110-10) on day two for Wilbur to move himself up in the competition and finish third. Wilbur turned in top five marks for eight of the events, including a second place mark in pole vault and the 1500 meter run.
Sophomore Bradley Beaty had top five marks in three of the events, and turned in a personal best 5879 in the decathlon. Beaty improved on seven of the events compared to his best last year. He finished the competition in fourth behind Wilbur. Sophomore Tanner Parks also posted new distances for seven events, but his pole vault and discus results placed him in sixth with a 5477.
For the women, Lennon finished day one in fifth place behind Brashears, after posting a second place finish in the 200 meter and fifth in the high jump. Lennon beat out Brashears on day two by out jumping her in the long jump and out throwing her in the javelin throw. Lennon’s 2:23.65 in the 800m would be the fastest posted in the heptathlon.
Brashears had a strong first day, which placed her third in the competition. She then completed the event with a 4206, placing her fourth overall. Turner posted new marks in the high jump, long jump, and javelin throw, but the no-score in the 100 meter hurdles would keep her in the bottom half of the group.
The full SFA Track and Field squad will kick off their 2017 outdoor season this weekend at the TCU Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas. The two day meet will beginning on March 17.
