SFA Claims Two Individual Titles in Houston

Final Results
Houston, Texas – Stephen F. Austin men’s and women’s teams traveled to Houston this weekend for the Houston Invitational and Multis competition, hosted by the University of Houston. Things got started on Friday afternoon, Jan. 27, with the women’s throw beginning at 10:00 a.m. Junior Kami Stockett led the Lumberjacks in the throwers ring with a new personal best, 15.11m (49-07.00) weight throw that landed her in 11th place. Her teammate sophomore Tierra Wilson also broke her personal record of 15.06m (49-05.00) that put her right behind Stockett at 12th. The other field events finished later that afternoon. For the men, sophomore Isaiah Pittman finished 5th in the long jump invitational event with a distance of 7.22m (23-08.25). In the weight throw, senior Lucas Akins threw a 17.77m (58-03.75) which landed him in sixth. Junior Ben Bibby, freshman Trenton Bridges, and David Castillo took a group effort and finished close at 11th, 12th, and 13th respectively.
The two freshman Caitlin Lennon and Sammi Jo Brashears stayed in the top 10 through the end of the pentathlon. Lennon finished 6th with a 3192 score, and Brashears had a 3004 final score and was in ninth place. Freshman Kaylee Bizzell competed in the pole vault and finished second in the event at a height of 3.85m (12-07.50). Sophomore Dakota Mayr also competed in the pole vault and took 5th.
Saturday’s competition started at 10:00 a.m. with the men’s and women’s shot put. Senior Lucas Akins threw a 12.97m (42-06.75) that landed him in second. Senior Derek Orlando finished in seventh and freshman Kevin Steward threw just short of him in eighth.
Freshman Noah Berney had his collegiate debut in Houston and seeded himself in fourth for the high jump at the height of 2.00m (6-06.75). In the pole vault, three Lumberjacks finished in the top 10. Junior Antonio Ruiz finished in fourth at a height of 5.05m (16-06.75). His teammates senior Daven Murphree and freshman Chad Horstmann were right behind him in sixth and eighth.
For the running events, the mile run was dominated by SFA runners, who took 6 of the top 11 spots. Senior Taylor Anderson ran a new personal record of 5:01.29, and freshman Caelidh Ross finished three second behind her in fourth. Senior Shelby Pesek was sixth with a time of 5:05.12. Senior Rana Ryan was seventh, freshman Taryn Surratt was eighth, and freshman Claire Crone was eleventh. On the men’s mile run, senior Josh Torres was sixth with a time of 4:21.88 and sophomore Larry Deramus was ninth (4:23.50). For the 3000m run, senior Mary Luster and senior Samantha Ottman were the top SFA finishers in fifth and ninth.
For the shorter distances, Stephen F. Austin had tons of success with junior Jonathan Joe claiming the individual title in the Men’s 400m and the first season wearing the SFA purple. He crossed with a 50.15 time. Sophomore D’Lance Sharp finished seven second behind him in second. Junior Tedrick Hawkins also claimed an individual title in the Men’s 200m with a time of 22.46. In the women’s 200m, junior Chelsi Gill took third with a time of 25.52, and teammate junior Tiffany Williams crossed the line right behind her. Sophomore Allison Compass hit a new personal record with a 2:17.00 run in the 800m and finished third. Her sister, Madison, was fourth, and Ross was fifth.
At the end of the day, both men’s and women’s 4x4 relays capped things off. Both team finished second in their respective races. The women’s team was made up of sophomore Dominique Jackson, Allison Compass, Williams, and freshman Imani Nave. The men’s 4x4 was ran by Sharp, Hawkins, junior Kerry Gleason, and senior William Gibson. They finished with a time of 3:22.46.
SFA will next be sending a group up to Colorado for the Air Force Team Challenge on Feb. 3. Then, SFA will be splitting into two groups the next weekend, Feb. 10, for the Howie Ryan Invitational and the Dunamis Sports Group College Classic II.
