33 SFA Student-Athletes Receive Degrees During December Commencement

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – 33 Stephen F. Austin student-athletes reached the pinnacle of their collegiate careers Saturday, receiving their degrees as part of SFA’s December commencement activities at William R. Johnson Coliseum.

The student-athletes were key figures in helping SFA comprise one of the most successful periods in SFA Athletics history. 10 different programs were represented with the graduates helping lead the Lumberjacks to 19 Southland Conference championships during their careers and a pair of SLC Commissioners Cup titles.

Among the list of graduates were 10 student-athletes that achieved All-Southland Conference honors, including a pair of SLC Players of the Year in Desmond Haymon (men’s basketball) and Charles Mathenge (cross country) and four SLC individual champions in Mathenge, Madeline Kaufmann, Caitlin Jones and Jessica Spelling (track and field).

Kyle Thornell (baseball), Mitchell McLeroy (men’s golf), Anthony Gallardo (track and field/cross country), Dhanielly Quevedo (tennis) and Jessica Hatchett earned All-Southland Conference honors during their SFA careers as well with Mason Juhl and Joshawa West helping SFA football reach the NCAA playoffs in 2014.
