NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin women's basketball team got double-digit scoring efforts from five different players to beat rival Sam Houston State 70-63 on Saturday night inside William R. Johnson Coliseum. The win snaps a five-game losing streak for the Ladyjacks and improves their all-time record against the Bearkats to 65-11.
Senior guard Taylor Schippers had a breakout performance to pace the balanced attack, scoring a season-high 25 points on 8-for-13 shooting. She tied a season best with four three-pointers and also notched three assists and two steals.
Junior center Adrienne Lewis and freshman guard Kennedy Harris also had career nights for the `Jacks. Lewis posted her second double-double of the year with a 10-point, 17-rebound showing. Her clinic on the glass shattered her previous career-high in boards. She added two assists and two blocks on the night.
For the first time as a collegiate athlete, Harris registered 11 points on Saturday behind 4-of-7 shooting. She also finished with four rebounds to lead all guards and swiped three steals.
Guards Chanell Hayes and Taylor Ross rounded out the group of five Ladyjacks in double figures at 10 points apiece. Ross dished out a game-high six assists.
Saturday marked the first time of the season where five different Ladyjacks scored 10+ points in a single game.
The Ladyjacks were in complete control from the opening tip. Schippers and Ross hit back-to-back three-pointers in the first two possessions to help SFA jump out to a 6-0 lead. That advantage ballooned up to 15-4 on Schippers' second triple of the game at the 5:15 mark in the opening quarter.
SFA led 25-15 after one and made it 38-24 by the halftime break when Schippers made a jumper right before the buzzer. The Ladyjacks would match that 14-point cushion as late as the 6:36 mark in the third quarter for the largest advantage of the night.
Sam Houston State never led at any point.
Lewis corralled an offensive rebound and dropped the put-back through with time expiring in the third quarter, giving SFA a 49-40 lead with 10 minutes to play.
Thanks in large part to 20 points in the second half by Bearkat senior Shernise Robertson, SHSU clawed its way back to four points, 67-63, with 25 seconds left to play. Schippers would ice the game at the line, however, making three in the closing seconds. SFA went 13-of-15 at the charity stripe for the game.
Robertson and Angela Beadle paced SHSU with 23 points each.
SFA spread the ball all night long, assisting on 17 of 25 made field goals. The defense was strong throughout as well, as eight different players recorded at least one of the team's 15 steals.
The Ladyjacks will hit the road next Saturday for an early game at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. First tip is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. in what will be SFA's only game of the week. The action will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
