NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin department of athletics has announced the hiring of Charles Hurley, who will serve as the assistant director of athletic media relations for the Lumberjacks’ 17-sport program.
Hurley, who calls Duluth, Minn., home, will oversee all the media relations efforts for volleyball, men’s basketball, baseball and women’s tennis at SFA. His duties began on Monday, Sept. 21.
Prior to his appointment in the Lone Star State, Hurley spent three years in the sports information office of SUNY Plattsburgh – an NCAA Division III institution located in Plattsburgh, N.Y. While in the North Country, Hurley was the assistant sports information director for two years before being elevated to the sports information director for the 2014-15 academic year.
As the sports information director, Hurley directed the media relations efforts for all 17 of the Cardinals’ intercollegiate athletic programs. Through the course of his tenure at Plattsburgh, the Cardinals enjoyed more than their fair share of success as the women’s hockey team captured two NCAA Division III national crowns. During both of those championships campaigns (2014 and 2015), Plattsburgh served as the host institution for the national championship tournament and Hurley played a major part in the promotion, setup and media relations aspects of them.
He gained his first taste of championship experience when Plattsburgh was selected as the co-host of the 2013 NCAA Division III Men’s Ice Hockey championships. Held at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, N.Y., Hurley assisted the venue’s staff in all of the media relations efforts for the tournament.
As the sports information contact for the Cardinals’ men’s and women’s basketball teams, Hurley was along for the ride as the men’s squad made it to a pair of NCAA Division III Tournament – advancing as far as the third round in 2013-14. That same season, Plattsburgh’s women’s basketball team enjoyed their finest season in program history by winning its first-ever conference title and progressing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Before securing his first full-time position in Plattsburgh, Hurley completed sports information internships at Newberry College, the University of Minnesota Duluth and worked briefly at the University of West Florida.
A graduate of Michigan Technological University, Hurley resides in Nacogdoches.
