TULSA, Okla. – Stephen F. Austin dropped a 7-0 decision to 35th-ranked Tulsa Sunday morning at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The loss drops the Ladyjacks to 5-3 on the season.
"Hats off to Tulsa,” said SFA head coach Roberto Aspillaga. “They just got out of losing by an inch to 11th-ranked Oklahoma State and instead of underestimating us and dropping their level, they did exactly the opposite. They played as hard as they possibly could and they gave us no chances to get in the match.”
Tulsa opened up the day with a 6-2 decision in the first doubles match as Valeria Terentyeva and Vivienne Kulicke fell in the No. 3 doubles. That was followed by a decisive 6-3 win in the No. 1 slot, defeating Malena Gordo and Dhanielly Quevedo to secure the doubles point.
The Golden Hurricane then remained dominant in the singles matches as Kulicke fell 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot, followed by a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of No. 6 Julia Lorca and a 6-0, 6-1 victory over No. 4 Terentyeva to secure the victory.
SFA was unable to muster a point on the day as No. 5 Macarena Sedano Acosta fell 6-1, 6-2, No. 2 Denise Maxl dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision and No. 1 Gordo fell 6-2, 6-3.
"The lesson to be learned is that we have to do a better job at taking care of the things that we can control in order to give ourselves a chance to compete with a team like Tulsa,” Aspillaga said. “Of course this is harder when you have to deal with some serious heat coming at you. This experience will help us perform in high pressure situations during conference.”
SFA will now have a few weeks off before returning to action in Las Cruces, N.M. on Friday, March 6, facing New Mexico State at 10 a.m.
