
Newton Named Assistant Director of Media Relations

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin athletic department announced the addition of Brian Newton to the media relations staff on Wednesday afternoon. He will serve as the primary contact for women's basketball, volleyball, softball, track and field and cross country.
A 2013 graduate of Simpson College, Newton comes to SFA after spending two years in professional baseball. He served as the media relations intern for the Iowa Cubs - the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs - during the 2013 season before moving to Jupiter, Florida, to work in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. During his time in Jupiter, Newton worked with the big league club during 2014 Spring Training and was the primary media relations contact for the High-A Palm Beach Cardinals over the course of the Florida State League season. His work as the media relations assistant for the Cardinals included compiling daily game notes, writing feature articles and press releases on the team, handling media requests, controlling social media outlets, creating graphics and recording statistics during games.
Newton attended Simpson in Indianola, Iowa, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in mathematics and economics/finance in 2013. He broke into the athletics communications field as a student assistant for the Simpson athletics communications department from 2012-13. During the span Newton assisted with the college's 21 varsity sports.
After transferring from Iowa State University during his freshman year, Newton was a three-year starter on the Simpson College men's soccer team as a central defender. He was a three-time Academic All-Conference selection and was named to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team in 2012.
Newton is a native of Newton, Iowa.
