MOMENT #7: SFA Claims Women's All-Sports Trophy
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – One of the hallmarks of SFA Athletics over the past decade has been the success of the department as a whole. That is a trend that continued in 2013-14 as SFA captured the Southland Conference Women’s All-Sport trophy for the third time and second in the last four years.
• Final 2013-14 Women's All-Sports Trophy Results
The Ladyjacks finished with 101.5 points, defeating second-place Central Arkansas by 5.5 points as the Sugar Bears finished with 96.0 points. Sam Houston State (91.0) placed third with Lamar (85.0) and McNeese State (78.0) rounding out the top-five.
The All-Sports trophies are awarded annually for men's and women's competition based on a 14-point system for all conference sports. Point values are tallied based on finish in the regular season Regular season champions receive 14 points and descending down to only one point awarded for last place. Points are awarded for the team trophy standings regardless of the number of teams competing in the championship.
SFA started off the 2013-14 season with a strong performance in the fall, capturing the SLC title in soccer while placing third in cross country. Women’s basketball then staged a furious rally over the final three weeks of the regular season to capture a share of the conference title, giving SFA an additional 13.5 points.
The spring season continued to bring more success to the Ladyjacks as indoor track and field placed second at the conference meet, mirrored by a second place finish at the outdoor championships in May. Softball finished fourth the SLC standing while golf placed fifth, its best-ever finish at the conference meet.
When the dust settled, seven of SFA’s nine women’s programs recorded double-digit point totals in the standings as soccer, volleyball, basketball, tennis and softball all qualified for their respective SLC tournaments. The effort by the women helped SFA finish second in the Commissioner’s Cup standings, missing out on capturing the title by just one point.
