NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks bested former Southland Conference member Texas State on Thursday night to advance to the quarterfinals of the Women’s Basketball Invitational with a 59-51 victory.
Porsha Roberts and Kali Jerrell each posted 14 points in the win as the Ladyjacks posted their first victory in a postseason tournament since 2000. SFA’s last postseason victory came in the first round of the NCAA Tournament 14 years ago.
SFA (21-12) built a strong lead in the first half but saw that quickly dwindle and turn into a deficit over the final 6:26 of the opening stanza. With SFA up 18-11, the Ladyjacks went cold and did not score for the remainder of the half. Texas State (16-16) took advantage and went to the locker room ahead of the Ladyjacks 19-18 at the break.
The Ladyjacks rebounded after the break and had one of its better offensive performances of the season, shooting 60 percent in the second half.
Turnovers again plagued the Ladyjacks as the Bobcats capitalized on 19 miscues by SFA to score 18 points. SFA only posted 10 points off turnovers. Texas State won the battle in the paint as well with 34 points to SFA’s 28.
In addition to the 14 points from Roberts, she added eight rebounds to lead the team along with Tierany Henderson. Roberts also swatted two blocks to pull within two of tying the school record of 175 for a career.
SFA posted seven blocks as a team Thursday night with Henderson rejecting four shots and Antionette Carter adding one.
Texas State got 21 points from Erin Peoples to lead the Bobcats, and Ayriel Anderson joined her in double digits with 11 points.
The Ladyjacks advance to the quarterfinals of the WBI and await the winner between No. 1 seed Grand Canyon and No. 8 seed Boise State. Results of that game were not known at press time. The site and date of SFA’s next game will be dependent upon which team SFA will face.
