NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin Athletic Director Robert Hill announced the hiring of David Wiechmann as assistant director of media relations. Wiechmann assumed his position earlier this week and comes to SFA from Kansas State where he served as an assistant director of athletics communications for the last five years.
“We’re very happy to have David join our staff,” Hill said. “His experience will strengthen our media relations department.”
Wiechmann brings seven years of experience as a sports information director to the position and previously worked as a sports reporter. During his time at K-State, Wiechmann oversaw the promotional efforts for the top 25-ranked volleyball and track and field programs while assisting with men’s and women’s basketball. He handled the media appearances and promotional efforts for Olympic silver medalist and back-to-back NCAA champion Erik Kynard and played a key role in planning and hosting the 2012 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Wiechmann is a native of Lubbock and a 2005 graduate of Texas Tech University where he majored in print journalism and worked for La Ventana, The University Daily and KTXT 88.1 FM.
“I am very excited about the opportunity to continue growing professionally in my new position at SFA while also helping Lumberjack Athletics promote the accomplishments of our coaches and student-athletes in competition and in the classroom,” Wiechmann said. “It also is nice to return to my home state of Texas after being away for nearly eight years.”
While at K-State, Wiechmann also was a member of an award-winning staff with he and other sports information directors receiving accolades for design and writing. His 2010 K-State Volleyball media guide received second-place honors from CoSIDA and his 2009 volleyball guide was ninth. His rowing publications also received top 10 honors.
Wiechmann will be responsible for promotional and media efforts for SFA women’s basketball, volleyball, softball and track and field.
