FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin placed 83 student-athletes on the Southland Conference Commissioner's Spring Academic Honor Roll, which was announced by the league office on Thursday.
SFA was one of seven schools to place at least 80 student-athletes on the list in what proved to be a record-breaking semester for the conference as 953 qualified for the honor. The 953 student-athletes surpassed the record of 932 set in the spring of 2010.
The Southland Conference Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll acknowledges participants in all sports sponsored by the league and its member institutions. The honor roll is released within 30 days at the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters, recognizing student-athletes who maintained a minimum 3.00 GPA for the semester in which the student-athlete's championship is held. Student-athletes, nominated by their respective academic advisors, must have been eligible to compete in a conference sport during the academic year in which the nomination occurs.
SFA finished with 12 on the list with a perfect 4.0 GPA for the semester, led by senior distance runner Amy Shackelford who was recently named a second team academic all-America selection. In all the women's track and field team paced all teams with 21 on the list, followed by the Lumberjack baseball team with 15.
Jarid Scarafiotti, a first-team academic all-SLC and first team all-SLC catcher, highlighted the baseball group with a 3.75 GPA in mathematics. The men's track and field team was next in line with a dozen on the list, followed by the Ladyjack softball team's 10 selections.
Also included were six apiece from the tennis and men's golf teams, along with five apiece from both the Ladyjack golf and basketball teams and three from the men's basketball team.
