
Ladyjacks Hold on for Key Road Win

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks held on for a one-point victory, 69-68, over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday evening at the American Bank Center. The win, combined with a Central Arkansas loss to Southeastern Louisiana, puts SFA in sole possession of second place in the Southland Conference standings (16-9/11-3 SLC).
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half. The Ladyjacks were 9-of-34 (.265) while, SFA held Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to a 24-percent performance. While both teams were struggling offensively the Islanders found a definite advantage on the glass outrebounding SFA, 32-24, in the opening half.
The Ladyjacks connected on four of their first six attempts in the second half, and quickly gained control of the game pushing their lead to as many as 13 points, but Deziree Green got Texas A&M-Corpus Christi back in the game by scoring seven consecutive points to cut the lead to six.
The Islanders continued to battle back and went to the free throw line with 1.8 seconds, and her team trailing by two. Davis, who entered the game as an 82 percent free throw shooter, and was 10-of-11 from the stripe missed her first attempt. Davis connected on her second, but SFA was able to inbound the ball and run out the clock.
The Ladyjacks shot 52 percent in the second half, and finished the game 25-of-65 (.385), while the Islanders were held to 34 percent. The Islanders outrebounded SFA, 52-39. The Ladyjacks were led by Tammara Marion's 20 points and seven rebounds. Junior Toni Davis added 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Islanders were led by Jade Davis' 23 points.
The Ladyjacks return to action Wednesday when they will host Central Arkansas in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The game against the Sugar Bears is slated to begin at 7 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
