HOUSTON, Texas - Sierra Highgate canned a jumper with just four seconds remaining to give Texas Southern its first win of the season, 64-63, over the Ladyjack basketball team on Saturday at the HP&E Arena.
The loss nullified a 32-point effort from Tammara Marion, the first 30-point effort by a Ladyjack since Nikki Carr had exactly 30 on Feb. 14, 2008 at Central Arkansas.
Marion hit four of her seven three-point tries on the night, and was good on all eight free throws in her career night. Toni Davis was the only other Ladyjack (1-6) to reach double figures, netting a dozen points while Decreasha Goodner pulled down a career-best 11 boards.
Jasmine Payne led the Tigers (1-6) with a double-double, netting 21 points and pulling in 11 rebounds as Texas Southern picked up its first win in five tries over SFA.
The Ladyjacks outrebounded TSU 43-35, including 16-11 on the offensive end, but still were outscored 42-23 in the paint and committed 24 turnovers that the Tigers turned into 19 points. Texas Southern led by as much as 10 points, while SFA was never able to build a lead any larger than their three-point lead with less than two minutes remaining in the game.
SFA hits the road for its next contest when it travels to nationally-ranked Oklahoma.
