
Ladyjacks Hammer Nicholls

THIBODAUX, La. - - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball recorded a 92-56 victory over Nicholls State Saturday to improve to 7-8 overall, and 2-1 in Southland Conference play.
SFA jumped to a 15-point first half lead, 19-4, behind some tough defensive pressure. The Ladyjacks forced NSU into 12 turnovers in the first eight minutes of the game to build their advantage. SFA kept up the pressure increasing their lead to 21, 32-11, with 7:50 remaining. The Ladyjacks forced NSU into 23 first half turnovers, and took a 49-26 lead into the locker room.
The Ladyjacks shot 17-of-45 (38 percent) from the floor in the opening half, and outrebounded Nicholls by seven, 26-19. The Ladyjacks had a huge advantage in the low post outscoring NSU, 26-4, in the paint, and 14-0 on second chance points.
The Ladyjack bench was also key in the first-half run outscoring the Colonels' reserves, 27-5. SFA was led by junior Whitney Cormier who was one of three Ladyjacks to score eight points in the opening half. Sophomore Decreasha Goodner added eight points, while freshman Amina Sawyer chipped in eight and pulled down five rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.
Nicholls came out of the locker room with a spark cutting the SFA lead to 15, but the Ladyjacks didn't allow NSU to get any closer. SFA shot 42 percent from the floor, and outrebounded their hosts by 21 in pushing their advantage to 30 points. The Colonels turned the ball over 33 times which SFA converted into 38 points.
The Ladyjacks finished the game with three players in double figures led by Ford who scored 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Sawyer added 10 points and eight rebounds, while Goodner came off the bench to net 12 points and pull down four rebounds. Freshman Tammara Marion added nine points on 3-of-6 shooting. Sophomore Chantol Drennan led all players on the glass pulling down 10 rebounds.
SFA returns to action Wednesday when it opens a two-game homestand. The Ladyjacks open the homestand with a 7 p.m. game against Texas-Arlington. The Ladyjacks will remain in Nacogdoches Saturday, Jan. 24 to host Southeastern Louisiana. The game against the Lady Lions is slated to begin at 6 p.m. Both games will be played at the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
