WACO, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team was handed its first loss of the season Friday night in Waco, Texas. The ninth-ranked Baylor Lady Bears defeated SFA, 77-42, at the Ferrell Center. SFA fell to 2-1 on the season, while the Lady Bears improve to 3-0.
After freshman Tammara Marion knocked down the first field goal of the game, the Lady Bears responded by going on a 33-3 run to take a 33-5 lead. The Ladyjacks went nearly 14 minutes before scoring their next field goal. Sophomore Whitney Cormier connected on a 15-footer from the baseline to dent the scoreboard. The Ladyjacks were able to connect on three of their four trips down the floor, but went into the locker room trailing, 41-9.
After starting the half 4-of-14, Baylor ended the half connecting on 10 of its final 19 shots. The Lady Bears shot 42.4 percent in the opening half, while holding SFA to a 4-of-23 (17.4 percent) performance. Baylor also knocked down 5-of-10 three-pointers, while SFA was unable to knock on down a three in the opening 21 minutes.
SFA head coach Lee Ann Riley rallied the troops during the intermission and the Ladyjacks came out of the locker room with a spark. SFA scored the first five points of the half, and picked up the intensity on defense. SFA forced the nation's ninth-ranked team into 19 turnovers on their home floor. Although Baylor picked up the victory, SFA hung tough with the Lady Bears in the second half. The Ladyjacks were only outscored by three in the final 20 minutes of the contest.
Freshman Tammara Marion led SFA with 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting, while Cormier added 11. Cormier also led SFA with eight rebounds. The Lady Bears finished the game with three players in double figures led by 13 each from Melissa Jones and Jhasmin Player.
