
SFA Picks Up Pair of Wins At Baylor Tournament

WACO, Texas - In a two-day, round robin tournament, the SFA Equestrian took two out of three competitions against a trio of schools at the Baylor Tournament over the weekend.
In round one action, SFA began the competition in Equitation over Fences against Delaware State where freshman Liz Landes picked up the lone point for the Ladyjacks. In Equitation on the Flat, senior Kristine Rice and freshman Andrea Routzon rallied back to win their points bringing the Hunter Seat score to a 3-3 tie. SFA won the hunt seat in the tiebreaker.
The western team had a dominating performance against the Hornets, sweeping both Western Horsemanship and Reining 6-0. Junior Kayla Krambeck and sophomore Kyra Cruse each won their horsemanship rides, while sophomores Kayle Bernal and Kyra Cruse won their reining points. Junior Jenny Martin won her horsemanship point and freshman, Lydia Roof won her reining head to head.
Round one ended with SFA defeating DSU with an impressive 9-3 victory.
Round two against Baylor began Friday afternoon with Equitation on the Flat and Horsemanship. SFA fell behind Baylor with three losses in Equitation on the Flat and was only able to claim one point in Western Horsemanship as Jenny Martin was able to crack the scoring column.
Round two resumed Saturday morning with Reining followed by Equitation over Fences. Sophomore Kayle Bernal came back with her second reining win of the tournament. In Equitation over Fences, freshmen Liz Landes and Kelly Loerwald rallied back with each winning their respective points. In the end, it just was not enough to come out on top as Baylor defeated SFA by an 8-4 margin.
In the last round of competition, SFA faced TCU for the second time this season. SFA had its most impressive Equitation over Fences performance of the tournament, with a 3-0 sweep of the event. Sophomore Kristin Landes posted a 74-0 performance against her opponent while freshman Emily Frost pulled out a 61-40 win on what turned out to be one of the most difficult horses of the fences competition. Freshman Liz Landes finished the tournament with her third win, posting a round high score of 80.
In Equitation on the Flat, TCU fought back winning two out of the three possible points, but sophomore Cat Brennan gave SFA the Hunt Seat win clinching ride with a very impressive score of 81 that also earned her Equitation on the Flat MVP honors.
In Western events, SFA fell behind TCU in Horsemanship 3-0. SFA's reining riders attempted to tie up the Western points with sophomores Kyra Cruse and Kayle Bernal winning both of their points with 67 and 74.5 points respectively. Lydia Roof put in a great effort but was defeated by her opponent, by just one-half point in a heartbreaking loss. Kayle Bernal's 74.5 point ride earned her the Reining MVP honor.
With a 4-2 win on the Hunt Seat side and a 4-2 loss on the Western, SFA and TCU were tied up 6-6 overall. Once the raw scores were tallied, SFA came out on top with 843.5 points to TCU's 608.5.
At tournament's end, Baylor came out the overall champion after winning all three rounds, SFA came out second with two wins and one loss, TCU was third with one win and two losses, and Delaware State finished fourth with three losses.
