NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin has been awarded both the Southland Conference cross country championships and outdoor track and field championships for the 2006-07 school year, the conference recently announced. In addition, SFA will host the 2009 SLC outdoor championships as part of the conference's new schedule of rotating sites.
"We are thrilled to have the chance to showcase our athletes and our facilities on the conference championship stage," SFA athletics director Robert Hill said. "We're excited by the chance to win SLC titles in two sports on our own campus, in the same year."
The 2006 SLC cross country championships will be run at Pecan Acres Park, adjacent to the SFA campus. The park has a short course frequented by the Lumberjack and Ladyjack harriers and has recently been used as the site of the Lumberjack Opener cross country meet. The championship race is set for Oct. 27.
The 2007 SLC outdoor championships are scheduled for May 4-6 at SFA's Homer Bryce Stadium. The stadium, which houses the Fletcher Garner Track and Field Complex, is currently undergoing several changes in preparation for the championship event. The track is being resurfaced, and work is planned to begin soon on a new scoreboard/videoboard assembly, which will be placed at the south end of the stadium.
