Three Qualify for NCAA Championships

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin's Stevina Wyatt qualified for the NCAA Championships with her performance at last week's regional meet. Tuesday, two other SFA athletes learned they would be joining her. Reggie Lazenby and Crystal Chang both punched their tickets to the national meet by virtue of their top performances from earlier in the season.
Wyatt earned her trip to the NCAA Championships by finishing second in the 400-meter hurdles at the Midwest Regional Championships. The senior hurdler turned in a time of 59.68, eclipsing her best time of the season by 34 one-hundredths of a second and marking the first time in her career that she had broken the 60-second barrier.
Lazenby, a junior, finished 10th in the long jump at the regional meet. However, his mark from the Southland Conference Championships was more than good enough to qualify him for the national meet. Lazenby broke the SFA school record and won the SLC title with a jump of 26-02.25. Heading into regional competition, the mark stood second-best in the nation and was the best performance this season by an American-born collegian.
Chang will compete in the heptathlon in the second trip to the NCAA Championships of her senior year. She finished 12th in the pentathlon at the indoor championships in March. Chang's best mark of the outdoor season is the 5,266 points she posted at the Texas Relays in April. She scored 5,255 points to win the SLC Championship.
The NCAA Championships are scheduled for June 7-10, at the A.G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, Calif.
