PLANO, Texas - Junior Reggie Lazenby was named Southland Conference Outstanding Male Field Performer, while classmate Ashley Monteau was named SLC Outstanding Female Track Performer announced league officials Friday afternoon.
Monteau led the Ladyjacks to a third-place at the SLC Outdoor Championships by winning the 5,000 and 10,000-meter runs. Monteau crossed the finish line with a time of 17:00.22 in 5,000 and 36:17.51 in the 10K. Monteau finished the 10,000 meters by more than a minute over her next closest competition.
Lazenby saved his best for last in the long jump as he was in fifth place and down to his last attempt in the finals before winning the league title with a school-record mark of 26-02.25. The record-setting performance couldn't have come at a more crucial point for Lazenby. After qualifying for the finals with the second-best jump of the day, he had scratched by narrow margins on his first two attempts in the final round. Meanwhile, three other competitors recorded jumps longer than his qualifying performance. Down to his last shot, Lazenby responded like a champion.
Lazenby heads to the NCAA Regional Championship as the top-ranked collegiate American in the event, and is second overall behind only Texas A&M's Fabrice Lapierre. The NCAA Regional Championships will be held Friday, May 26 through Saturday, May 27 in Austin, Texas.
