
Monteau Wins 10,000 Meters

ARLINGTON, Texas - Stephen F. Austin junior Ashley Monteau won the 10,000-meter run Saturday, on the opening day of the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Monteau finished the race in 36:17.51, winning by more than a minute and leading three SFA runners who recorded scoring finishes. Amber Bagwell finished in 38:04.97 to take fifth, and Kimbri Lettkeman crossed the line two seconds later in sixth place.
The Ladyjacks' strong showing in the last event of the evening put them in second place heading into Day 2 on Sunday. The SFA women trail Sam Houston State, 25-23, after also recording scoring performances in the hammer and javelin throws. Colleen Lonergan took sixth place in the hammer with a throw of 156-08. In the javelin, Sarah Emerson recorded a sixth-place finish with a throw of 131-02.
The Lumberjacks wrapped up Day 1 in sixth place with 12 points. Scott Reid took fifth place in the hammer throw with a mark of 158-11. Two Lumberjacks scored in the 10,000 meters. Rodney Joseph just missed All-SLC honors with a fourth-place time of 32:22.00, and Gerardo Moreno took sixth with a time of 33:04.41.
Senior Crystal Chang wrapped up the first day of heptathlon competition in second place. She trailed leader Amy Fledderman, of Southeastern Louisiana, by just one point with a score of 3,103. In the decathlon, Bo Simpson was set to open Day 2 in fifth place.
The action will resume Sunday at 9 a.m. with the conclusion of the heptathlon and decathlon.
